What is a Dental Emergency?

At Rancho Dental, we know accidents happen. These accidents can result in minor or serious trauma to our teeth and mouth. On the other hand, we may have a toothache that we are not sure what to do about. In such cases, it is good to know what a dental emergency is and how to handle it.

Time is of the Essence

Any dental problem that needs immediate attention and treatment to alleviate severe pain, stop ongoing tissue bleeding or save a tooth is considered a dental emergency. It is important to take care of dental emergencies as soon as possible to prevent loss of teeth, infections and other complications.

What to do in a dental emergency?

DO take pain relievers that have acetaminophen (Tylenol, Actamin, Elixsure, etc.).

Do NOT take anticoagulants (aspirin or ibuprofen).

Schedule an emergency appointment with your Dentist.

Should I call my Dentist?

Severe Pain

If you are suffering from severe mouth, tooth, or gum pain schedule an exam appointment with your Dentist immediately. Your Dentist will find the cause of the severe pain and help find you the best relief method.

Most severe pain is caused by a lost filling or crown, debris under the gum line, infection, or a cracked/broken tooth. To aid in pain relief until your appointment, apply ice to the affected area for 10-20 minutes every. If needed, take acetaminophen as directed on the label.

Tongue or Lip Injury

Minor cuts or lacerations will most likely heal on their own. Clean the wound and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
