Should I Stop Flossing?

At Rancho Dental, this is a question that can come up when discussing home dental care. Why? Some patients say they notice their gums bleed when they try to floss and therefore think it is best to stop flossing. When they ask “should I stop flossing?” we tell them definitely not!

What the Bleeding Means

If you notice blood when you floss, should you be alarmed? Our mouth has many ways of telling us when it is not healthy. Bleeding gums is one such way. When there is an overabundance of bacteria in your gums, it inflames and irritates them, which is a beginning stage of gingivitis (gum disease). If you continue flossing, you are cleaning away bacteria. In one to two weeks, the bleeding should stop.

On the other hand, if you stop flossing, the gums will likely become more inflamed which will eventually lead to gingivitis. If this condition is left untreated, more serious problems like bone loss can occur.

Floss Everyday

If you were wondering should I stop flossing, how do you feel now? As you can see, if you notice bleeding gums when you floss, do not view it as a reason to stop flossing. It is in fact a sign that you need to clean your teeth better!
