Invisalign and Orthodontics: Get the Facts
Here at Rancho Dental, we love giving our patients a straighter smile that they can be proud of. But we know one “size” does not fit all when it comes to teeth. In other words, we want our patients to have more than one solution that they can choose from to get a straighter smile. After all, each of us has unique circumstances and smile goals.
A Variety of Options
Therefore, we not only offer traditional Orthodontics but also Invisalign. While colorful braces may appeal to one patient, another may desire a less noticeable appliance. Are you or someone you know thinking of getting braces? Are you familiar with Invisalign and Orthodontics?
It is important to consider what you want. After all, it is your smile! However, before you make a decision, it’s necessary to inform yourself with the options available to you.
Traditional Orthodontics
Traditional Orthodontics involves metal brackets being glued to the surface of your teeth. Wires and rubber bands are then applied. Clear brackets are also available for a less noticeable option. On average, braces take anywhere from 1 to 3 years. It depends on how severe the problem is, as well as your age. For example, a child’s teeth will respond faster to the braces compared to an adult’s teeth.
You will typically be seen monthly by your Orthodontist for a checkup and adjustment which includes a rubber band change. If needed, the doctor will prescribe such things as spacers to create more space between teeth. Additionally, the doctor may recommend metal bands that go around the molars for greater strength, lessening the chance of brackets falling off. Care for your braces involves brushing and flossing daily, especially after meals since food can easily get stuck between the braces. Follow up treatment will often involve a retainer to be worn post braces.
Invisalign
Perhaps you are an adult or a teen that thinks braces would make you feel self-conscious. Invisalign is most popular with this age group for this very reason- Invisalign is invisible! The doctor uses x-rays, impressions, and photos to create your Invisalign tray in order to match your teeth perfectly. Once you receive your Invisalign or aligner tray, you need to be disciplined enough to wear it 22 to 24 hours a day. This generally lasts around 6 to 18 months depending on patient needs.
As your teeth change and move, you will need your trays to adapt as well. This requires getting a new aligner tray every 2 weeks and visiting your dental office every 4 to 6 weeks. When eating or drinking anything except water, it is important to remove your trays. After your meal or beverage, you will want to brush your teeth as well as clean your trays before putting them back in. This helps to avoid staining the trays. Follow up treatment, like braces, often involves a retainer.
