Do You Need a Mouthguard Temecula?

A mouthguard Temecula is a device worn over the teeth for protection from potential injury. There are special mouthguards for different needs. Most athletes wear mouth guards to protect from damage.

The Ideal Mouthguard

  • allows for easy speaking and breathing
  • stays in place
  • durable and easy to clean
  • comfortable fit
  • odorless and tasteless

Who Should Wear One?

According to The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), football players must wear “brightly colored, intraoral mouthguards…to reduce the frequency and severity of craniofacial and intraoral morbidity and mortality…”

However, the American Dental Association recommends the use of a mouthguard for anyone participating in a sport/action with a potential for the teeth to contact a hard surface or another player. As you can imagine, this pretty much covers any sport- bike riding, basketball, gymnastics, ect.  Basically, you need a mouthguard if you don’t want chipped teeth or worse in sports!

What Type of Mouthguard is Best?

It depends on your specific needs. Here are the 3 most common types of mouthguards:

  • Stock: These are the least expensive but also have lowest quality. You can purchase these at your local drugstore and you can expect them to come preformed and ready to wear. Made of rubber or polyvinyl, they tend to be uncomfortable and ill-fitting since they are not personally fitted.
  • Mouth-Formed: A shell-liner or boil and bite are the two common types in this category. The Consumer Guide to Dentistry explains, “The first type is lined with acrylic gel or rubber that molds to the teeth and sets to keep its shape. The second type, made of thermoplastic, is placed in boiling water then formed and molded to the contours of the teeth using the fingers, lips, tongue and biting pressure. Boil-and-bite mouth guards can be reheated and refitted if the fit isn’t comfortable initially.” These can be purchased online and at sporting goods and drug stores. As you likely realize, these are a better option than stock mouthguards but cannot compare to a custom-fitted mouthguard.
  • Custom-Fitted: The most expensive but the absolute best option if you are looking for the most comfort and protection. This is because they are made from a cast of your teeth for a precise fit. You can get these at the dentist’s office. From the impression your dentist takes of your teeth, a lab technician will create your custom fitted mouthguard.
