3 Dental Myths Debunked
There are so many ways we can truly benefit our dental health. The best place to receive such tips and instructions are at the dental office. But what about on the internet when you do some of your own research? That is a time to be very careful and consider whether it is trustworthy or not. For example, below are 3 dental myths debunked.
First Myth: Chewing Sugar-Free Gum is as good as Brushing Your Teeth
Truth: If only this were true! Imagine how much easier your oral health care routine would become. On one hand, it is true that a piece of gum does the mouth some good. It encourages saliva production which helps wash away impurities. However, tooth brush bristles and floss can do what chewing gum cannot, namely, removing plaque from tooth surfaces and beneath the gums.
Second Myth: If Flossing Causes your Gums to Bleed, Don’t Floss
Truth: Do not believe this dental myth. In reality, discontinuing flossing is the worst thing you can do! Inflammation, due to a build-up of bacteria, is what really causes bleeding. If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it is your gums’ way of telling you that there is an issue. By flossing daily, you will be clearing away the bacteria in the areas your toothbrush cannot reach. If the issue continues, let your dentist know! You may need a professional cleaning.
Third Myth: Nothing is Bothering You So a Dental Check-Up is Unnecessary
Truth: Do not fall into the huge misconception of this dental myth! Often, the beginning stages of a dental issue do not have any symptoms. As a result, you assume there is nothing wrong. However, at your 6 month check-up, a combo of x-rays and a trained eye, can detect even the tiniest abnormality. In fact, if you wait until something begins to bother you it means the issue has progressed too far. Then, such procedures as a root canal or extraction can be in order. In other words, go to your 6 month check up to prevent problems!
